Sinking driveway pavers in Officer are urgent when they rock, pond water or open at the edge.

A small 5-10mm dip that still drains can wait. A 20mm trip lip, rocking pavers, edge rows moving outward, or water ponding after rain should be repaired soon. Localised driveway paver repairs usually cost $850-$1,800, while larger base repairs commonly land at $2,400-$5,800 in 2026.

What it means

Why Officer pavers sink in the first place.

Driveway pavers are meant to be a flexible pavement. That is why they are a good choice on Officer and Cardinia Lakes clay. Instead of one continuous slab cracking, each paver can move slightly on a bedding layer over compacted crushed rock. The system works when the base is thick enough, the bedding is even, the joints are full, the surface drains, and the edges are restrained.

Most sinking paver calls we see fall into three groups. The first is simple age: after 8-12 years the joint sand is low, the bedding has compacted a little more in wheel tracks, and a shallow dip appears. That can often wait until a dry spell. The second is construction shortcut: the base was too thin, poorly compacted, or laid over wet fill. Those repairs need more than tapping pavers back into place. The third is water: a blocked channel drain, poor fall from the garage, or garden bed runoff washing fines out from under the edge.

The giveaway is movement under load. Put your foot on the suspect paver and rock your weight forward. If it clicks, tilts or pumps water, the bedding under it has a void. Drive a car over it and the void grows. In a month of wet weather, that small loose spot can become a wheel-track repair.

DIY or trade

What a homeowner can safely do.

You can safely clear leaves from strip drains, sweep fresh joint sand into stable pavers, remove weeds by hand, and measure the worst trip lip with a ruler. You can also mark the low area after rain with chalk so a contractor can see the drainage pattern. Those tasks cost little and make the repair decision clearer.

You probably do not need to pay a paving contractor for a clean and re-sand if the driveway is flat, stable and only looks tired. A homeowner can buy joint sand and a compatible sealer for a few hundred dollars. Use low pressure water and a stiff broom, not an aggressive pressure washer held close to the joints. Blasting joints is how good pavers become loose pavers.

Do not DIY a traffic lane repair unless you have the right compaction gear and know how to rebuild levels. Driveways are different from patios because the wheel load repeats in the same track. If the bedding is not compacted and screeded properly, the paver may look flat for a week and sink again after the next wet spell.

Same-week jobs are the ones with a safety or water path issue: a trip lip at the front door path, a paver rocking in a wheel track, water ponding against the garage, or an edge row spreading toward the garden. Those do not get cheaper by waiting. Jobs that can wait include shallow dips under 10mm, low joint sand with stable pavers, and cosmetic staining that does not affect grip.

Measure the worst lip before you call.

A photo with a ruler tells us whether the job is maintenance, a local lift and re-lay, or a base failure. That saves a wasted visit.

Repair process

What a proper repair includes.

A proper driveway paver repair starts by lifting well beyond the visible dip. If the low spot is 1m wide, the real repair may be 2-3m wide so the new level feathers back into the old surface. The pavers are stacked in order if they have colour variation. Broken or oil-stained units are set aside and replaced if stock can be matched.

The bedding layer is then scraped back to the compacted base. If the base is firm and dry, we re-screed bedding sand or fine aggregate and re-lay. If the base pumps, is wet, contains organic material, or has collapsed at the edge, it gets rebuilt. That usually means geotextile, compacted crushed rock, corrected fall and new bedding. Edge failures get a concrete haunch or suitable steel restraint depending on traffic load.

After the pavers are laid, they are compacted with a protective mat, jointed with washed or polymer-modified sand depending on the surface, and checked for fall. For a driveway, we do not judge success by eye alone. Water should leave the driveway without sitting in the wheel track or running toward the house.

Most small repairs take half a day to one day. Larger repairs with edge restraint take 1-3 working days. If drainage needs to connect to stormwater, or if the driveway meets a council crossover, allow time for the right approval or plumbing work. A repair inside your property boundary is not the same as work in the road reserve.

FAQ

Sinking driveway paver questions

What does it mean when driveway pavers sink in Officer?
Sinking pavers usually mean the bedding sand has washed out, the base was not compacted properly, edge restraint has failed, or reactive clay has moved below the pavement. A 5-10mm low spot can be normal aging after 8-12 years. A 25mm dip, rocking pavers or a spreading edge means the pavement system is failing and should be repaired.
How much does it cost to fix sinking driveway pavers?
Small driveway paver repairs in Officer usually cost $850-$1,800 for a localised lift and re-lay. A larger 15-30sqm repair with base correction is commonly $2,400-$5,800. If the outer edge restraint has failed along a full driveway, allow $4,000-$8,500 because the edge rows need lifting, restraint built and levels reset.
Can I fix sinking pavers myself?
You can safely top up joint sand, reset one or two small patio pavers, and clear blocked surface drains. Do not DIY a driveway traffic lane, a sunken area over 2sqm, a paver field beside a crossover, or any area with a 20mm trip lip. Vehicle loading and edge restraint make driveway repairs less forgiving than garden path repairs.
When are sinking pavers urgent?
Same-week repair is sensible when a paver rocks under a car tyre, the edge row has opened more than 10mm, water is ponding after every rain, or a trip lip is 20mm or more. Those faults get worse with each wet week and each vehicle pass. A shallow cosmetic low spot that drains can often wait until spring or summer.
Will new joint sand fix a sunken driveway?
Joint sand helps only when the pavers are already level and stable. It does not lift a sunken paver, replace missing bedding sand under the surface, or restrain an edge that is moving sideways. If the paver moves underfoot, new sand is maintenance, not a repair.
Why do Officer driveways sink after wet winters?
Officer and Cardinia Lakes commonly have reactive clay, so wet winters can swell the subgrade and dry summers can shrink it again. If drainage is poor, the base stays wet and fines pump out under traffic. A proper repair restores fall, compacts the base and locks the edges so the pavers can tolerate seasonal movement.
