Edge restraint in Officer - the detail that decides whether your pavers last 5 years or 30.
If you’ve looked at a 5-year-old paver driveway in Officer South or older Heritage Springs and noticed the outer rows have walked outwards, sunk by 20-30mm at the corners, or the joint sand is gone - you’re looking at a missing or failed edge restraint. It’s the invisible 5% of the job that determines the visible 95% of the result.
The settlement story in 60 seconds.
Pavers are a deliberately flexible system - that’s their advantage on reactive clay. Each unit settles independently, tolerating clay movement that would crack a slab. But that same flexibility means every vehicle pass over a paver driveway pushes the outermost paver outward by a tiny, imperceptible amount.
Without something pushing back along the perimeter, those micro-movements accumulate. By year 2 the outer paver has walked outward 2-5mm. By year 3 it’s 8-15mm. The bedding sand starts washing out from the gap. The next paver in starts settling into the void. Within 5 years the outer 600mm of the driveway looks tired, sunken, the joint sand is gone, and the cure is to lift everything, build proper edge restraint, and re-lay.
What edge restraint does.
A continuous concrete haunch or driven steel edge along the paved perimeter physically prevents the outer paver from migrating. It locks the entire paved surface against itself. With proper restraint, paver driveways in Officer routinely hit 25-40 years before the bedding course needs attention. Without it, they look tired by year 5.
The driveway-grade detail.
Our standard concrete haunch for an Officer paver driveway is a 150mm wide × 200mm deep continuous concrete strip poured around the full perimeter in 25 MPa concrete. The top of the haunch sits flush with the underside of the paver bedding sand - so it’s completely invisible once pavers are laid and surrounding ground is reinstated.
How we build it.
- Excavate the perimeter trench to design depth (typically 250mm below finished surface to allow paver thickness + bedding sand + haunch).
- Compact subgrade to AS 3727 spec - same as the main pavement base.
- Pour 25 MPa concrete monolithically against compacted ground (no separate formwork inside if the trench is clean).
- Saw-cut articulation joints at 3-4m centres per AS 2870 reactive-clay requirements - same logic as a slab.
- Cure 7 days minimum before laying bedding sand and pavers against the haunch.
Why it has to be poured first.
A common shortcut is laying the pavers, then trying to pour concrete against the laid edge afterwards. It doesn’t bond properly - the haunch and the pavers move independently from day one, the haunch starts cracking away from the paver edge by year 2, and the restraint function is compromised. Haunch first, pavers second. Always.
Cost.
A concrete haunch adds typically $55-$90 per linear metre to a paving install. On a 60sqm Officer driveway with ~32 linear metres of perimeter, that’s an additional $1,800-$2,900 to the total project cost. Retrofitting the same haunch to a driveway that’s already settled and needs lifting first runs $4,000-$7,000 - the maths of doing it once, properly, is pretty clear.
When the lighter detail is right.
On Officer patios, pool surrounds, garden paths and other non-vehicle paved areas, we use 5mm hot-dip galvanised steel edging driven into the prepared base. The standard product is 100mm or 150mm deep, with integrated stake pockets driven every 600mm with 400-500mm steel pegs.
Why steel here.
- Faster install - $25-$45 per linear metre vs $55-$90/lm for concrete haunch.
- Cleaner sightline against turf or garden bed - the steel sits flush with finished levels.
- Galvanised finish lasts 30+ years in residential soil conditions.
- Less site disturbance when paving against existing established landscaping.
Where we won’t use steel.
Anywhere a vehicle drives. Steel edging eventually fatigues under repeated vehicle loading - the pegs flex, the bedding base compacts asymmetrically, and within 10 years the restraint function is gone. Driveways and crossovers always get a concrete haunch in our spec. No exceptions, no “we’ll save you a few hundred dollars” variations.
The other half of paver longevity.
Edge restraint locks the perimeter. Polymer-sand jointing locks the interior. Together they turn a flexible paver system into a coherent, durable, low-maintenance surface that tolerates Officer’s Class H clay movement without falling apart.
What we use.
A polymer-modified jointing sand - Techniseal HP NextGel or equivalent product certified for vehicular paver applications. Swept dry into the joints, compacted, second pass to top up, watered carefully to activate the polymer binder, allowed to cure 24-48 hours before traffic.
Lifespan vs plain sand.
Plain washed sand jointing in Officer washes out within 1-2 winters - every heavy rain event flushes a percentage of joint sand into the stormwater system, weeds germinate in the gaps, joints widen, individual pavers start rocking. Polymer sand resists wash-out and weed germination, lasting 5-10 years before a refresh is needed. Refresh cost is modest - typically $400-$900 on a residential driveway depending on area.
Why both matter.
Polymer sand without edge restraint: the jointed mass migrates outwards as a unit, the edge collapses, joints fail in rotation. Edge restraint without polymer sand: joints wash out, weeds invade, individual pavers rock. Both done properly: driveway looks new at year 15.
