Pool surround paving in Officer & Cardinia Lakes.
Non-slip natural stone and porcelain pavers around residential pools. Bluestone, granite, sandstone, through-coloured porcelain — all tested P4/R11 or better to AS 4586. Bullnose copers, pool-zone falls, chemical-safe edging, integration with glass pool-fence spigots.
Slip-rating is the first decision.
Australian Standards AS 4586 (slip resistance) and AS 4663 (wet pendulum testing) classify paver surfaces by P-rating (P0–P5) and R-rating (R9–R13). For a residential pool surround:
- Within 1m of waterline: P4 / R11 minimum. Honed bluestone or granite, flamed or bush-hammered finishes, sand-blasted sandstone, or specifically-rated porcelain pavers.
- Wider pool patio: P3 / R10 acceptable. Standard honed or natural-finish stone.
- What we never lay near a pool: polished granite, polished travertine, smooth-finished porcelain, or any surface that tests below P3 wet.
Material choices we recommend.
- Bluestone (honed or flamed): R11–R12. Charcoal-grey, salt-resistant, 30+ year horizon. ~$95–$160/m² supplied for 30mm pavers.
- Granite (flamed): R11–R12. Hardest available, deeper colours (charcoal, dark grey, occasionally rust-flecked), salt-resistant. ~$120–$180/m² supplied.
- Sandstone (sand-blasted): R11–R12. Warm honey/cream tones, slightly porous so needs salt-resistant sealing at install + 4-yearly refresh. ~$85–$140/m² supplied.
- Through-coloured porcelain (20mm): R11 (specifically rated). Zero porosity, frost-proof, chemical-resistant, modern minimal look. ~$120–$190/m² supplied.
Bullnose copers — the edge that matters.
The pool-edge paver row is where shin-bashing happens. We default to bullnose-edge copers — pavers with a rounded edge profile sitting on the pool coping line. Bluestone bullnose copers: ~$60–$90/m supplied for 30mm thickness, ~$120–$160/m installed (cut, fitted, glue-bedded onto existing pool coping). Square-edge pavers look more contemporary but are sharper underfoot and chip at the waterline over years. We’ll spec square-edge if the design calls for it — just want you to make the call knowingly.
Pool-zone falls and drainage.
The pool surround needs fall AWAY from the pool (so chlorine-rich splash drains to lawn or drainage point, not back into the pool itself), but also fall AWAY from the house and away from glass-fence panels. We design 1:60 fall away from pool with grated linear drains at the patio perimeter to catch splash overflow before it crosses onto adjacent lawn or paths. AS 3727 minimum is 1:80; for pool zones we go steeper because splash volumes are higher and you don’t want puddles around the lounge / sun-chair zone.
Salt-chlorinator vs natural stone.
The majority of new Officer pools are salt-chlorinator. Salt water is mildly aggressive to porous stone over years. Bluestone, granite and porcelain are essentially unaffected. Sandstone and travertine will show salt-spray pitting on the pool-edge row within 8–12 years if unsealed. If you want the warm tone of sandstone at the pool edge, we recommend penetrating salt-resistant sealer (Aqua Mix or LTP) at install and refresh every 4 years — or use bluestone/porcelain for the immediate splash zone and sandstone in the wider patio.
Pool-fence integration.
Glass-balustrade and aluminium pool fences fix through pavers into a solid sub-base. We pre-position concrete pad footings under each spigot location during base prep, then the fence-installer drops the spigots into those footings after paving is laid and cured. Vic pool-fence regulations require continuous compliance — we coordinate with the pool fencer so the fence comes down only as long as needed for paving work, and gets re-certified before water goes back into the pool.
