What's a safe non-slip rating for a pool surround in Officer?

Accepted Answer

Australian Standard AS 4586 (Slip resistance) and AS 4663 (Wet-pendulum testing) classify slip resistance by P-rating (P0-P5) and R-rating (R9-R13). For a residential pool surround we recommend P4/R11 minimum on the immediate pool edge (within 1m of waterline) and P3/R10 acceptable on the wider patio. Bluestone and granite both naturally test R11 in honed finish, R12 in flamed or bush-hammered finish. Sandstone tests R10-R11 honed, R11-R12 sand-blasted. Through-coloured porcelain pool pavers (Adbri, Boral) are specifically tested and labelled — most are R11. We never lay polished or smooth-finished stone immediately around a pool — they fail wet-pendulum below P3 every time.

Bullnose copers vs square-edge pavers for the pool edge?

Accepted Answer

Bullnose copers (rounded edge profile sitting on the pool coping line) are the safer call for any pool with kids or grandparents — the rounded edge stops shin-bashing, gives a clean visual break between pool water and paving, and aligns with the pool waterline so water doesn't pond against the coping. Square-edge pavers laid flush with the pool edge look more contemporary but are sharper underfoot when wet and tend to create a thin overhang that chips over years. Standard bluestone bullnose coper is ~$60-$90/m supplied for 30mm thickness, ~$120-$160/m installed (cut, fitted, glue-bedded to existing pool coping). We default to bullnose unless the design specifically calls for square-edge.

Does chlorine or salt damage natural stone pool surrounds?

Accepted Answer

Salt chlorinator water (the majority of new Cardinia Lakes / Officer pools) is mildly aggressive on porous stone over years. Sandstone and travertine particularly will show salt-spray pitting on the pool-edge row of pavers within 8-12 years if unsealed. Bluestone, granite and porcelain are essentially unaffected — they're either non-porous or salt-resistant. Mitigation if you're set on sandstone or travertine pool surrounds: penetrating salt-resistant sealer (Aqua Mix or LTP brands) applied at install and refreshed every 4 years, plus a generous splash zone (drained linear or grated drain to catch waterline overflow rather than letting it sit on the pavers). For a 30+ year horizon pool, we usually recommend bluestone or porcelain at the immediate edge with sandstone in the wider patio if the warm tone is wanted.

Do I need an engineer for a pool-surround paving job?

Accepted Answer

Usually no for the paving itself — at-grade pool surrounds are exempt residential pavement work under AS 3727. You DO need engineer involvement if: (1) the pool surround sits on top of a retaining wall above 1m (the wall needs AS 4678 engineering), (2) the surround is elevated (suspended) above natural ground on a structural slab — that's structural concrete work, different scope, and (3) you're cantilevering pavers over the pool coping line by more than 50mm — large-format cantilevers need pull-out fixing engineering. The pool itself needs its own structural and fence-compliance certification (Vic pool-fence regulations apply) but the surround paving doesn't trigger that, just needs to integrate with it cleanly.

Question 5

How long after a new pool is installed can the surround paving start?

Accepted Answer

Generally 4-6 weeks after pool shell completion and 2-3 weeks after first fill. The pool concrete needs full curing before being loaded with adjacent paving works, and the pool surround paving wants to be coordinated with the final pool coping (the stone or tile band that sits on the pool shell rim, around 50mm wide). Sequencing matters: (1) pool shell + coping band installed by pool builder, (2) backfill compacted to the pool shell edges, (3) we excavate the surround zone to depth, lay base, install drainage and pavers tying into the coping. If we're brought in too early, the coping isn't there to tie pavers into; too late, we're working over pool-builder backfill that's poorly compacted. We coordinate scheduling with your pool builder if you ask us in at quote stage.

Question 6

What about glass-balustrade or pool-fence integration with the paving?

Accepted Answer

Pool fences and glass spigots fixed through pavers need core-drilled fixings into a solid sub-base — either a structural concrete slab or our compacted Class 3 base with concrete pad footings under each spigot point. The Vic pool-fence regulations require the fence be installed before the pool is filled and remain compliant continuously; if your paving job lifts or replaces existing surround pavers, the fence and gate compliance has to be maintained throughout the work. We coordinate with the pool-fence installer — usually we install the paver bedding with concrete pad footings pre-positioned for the fence spigots, then the fence is installed after paving is laid and polymeric-sand cured. The whole job is typically 3-4 weeks elapsed when fence + paving + drainage are all coordinated.
