Repair, re-lay, extend

Segmental paving repair in Officer & Cardinia Shire.

Lift sunken or heaved pavers, regrade the base, re-bed, re-lay and polymeric-sand the joints. Extend an existing driveway. Refresh joints on a 10-year-old patio. Honest, cheaper-than-replacement work for pavers that still have life left in them.

When segmental repair is the right call.

Good candidates for repair.

  • Sunken or lifted patch under 30% of the total paved area
  • Pavers themselves still in good condition — minimal chipping, colour OK
  • Base appears sound elsewhere — the failure is localised, not systemic
  • 10–25 year old driveways or patios that lost their joint sand (washed out by rain over years)
  • Driveway extension when adding a carport, widening a single to a double, or extending around a new pool / addition

Bad candidates (need full replacement).

  • Over 50% of paved area sunken / heaved / cracked — systemic base failure
  • Pavers themselves heavily chipped, salt-bleached or structurally damaged
  • Tree roots growing under and lifting wide areas (root removal + base rebuild is more invasive than fresh paving)
  • Underlying drainage failure (water actively coming up through pavers) — needs full base-and-drainage rebuild

Our repair process.

  1. Inspection (free): Walk the paving, lift a representative paver to inspect bedding and base, identify the failure cause. Without identifying cause, the repair just relocates the failure 1m sideways.
  2. Lift: Carefully remove affected pavers, preserving each one (we’ll need them back, unless we’re replacing with matched stock). Lay out in correct re-install order.
  3. Re-prep base: Excavate any settled or washed-out sub-base, re-compact existing Class 3 base or top up where needed, re-screed bedding sand to correct level.
  4. Re-lay: Pavers re-laid in original pattern, cuts re-fitted at edges, levels checked against adjacent unaffected paving.
  5. Polymeric sand: All joints in repair area + at least 500mm into surrounding unaffected paving swept with polymeric sand, mist-activated, cured. This stops recurrence at the repair boundary.

Why your joints washed out (and the polymeric-sand fix).

Most segmental paving laid in Officer before about 2018 used white silica jointing sand. It looked good day one but washed out within 2–5 winters — the open joints then let bedding sand escape, water find its way under pavers, and ants colonise. The result: settled patches, lifted edges, weeds. The fix is polymeric sand — $8–$15/m² for a full driveway joint refresh, ~$80–$120 per 22kg bag covering ~12m². Sweep into joints, mist-wet, polymer activates and sets to a flexible-rigid water-shedding joint. We do joint refresh on its own as a 1-day job and it adds 10–15 years to the life of the existing paving.

Extending existing paving — the two challenges.

Paver matching: Adbri, Boral and Brikmakers segmental pavers all have batch-to-batch colour variation, and many older patterns are discontinued. We bring 3–5 colour-matched options to your site visit; you pick the closest. The new section is usually presented as a deliberate band (separated by an edge course or change of pattern) rather than a seamless extension — honest blocking looks better than failed blending.

Levels and falls: The new section ties into existing levels at a defined point and carries existing falls. We re-screed the join zone, install an expansion / edge restraint at the boundary, and confirm drainage works across the whole area before paver-lay.

Typical repair pricing (Cardinia Shire 2026).

  • Small spot repair (1–3m² lift-and-relay): $400–$900 minimum job
  • Localised re-lay 5–10m²: $700–$1,500
  • Joint sand refresh on existing 60m² driveway: $500–$900
  • Driveway extension 10–15m² matched: $1,800–$3,200
  • Full re-lay 30–50m² over fresh base: $4,500–$8,500

When discontinued pavers stop a match.

Sometimes the original pavers aren’t available. Option A: salvage from a hidden side-path to use for the visible repair, then re-lay the hidden area with a different acceptable paver. Option B: honest blocking — repair zone in a complementary contrast paver, framed by an edge course of original. Both read as intentional, not failed. Worth a 5-min phone call with photos of your existing paver — we can usually tell you on the spot whether match-stock is realistic.
