Cardinia Lakes is young-family country — mortgage-belt couples in new 4-bed builds on 350-500m² lots, kids under 10, both parents working. The default 2026 paving package is: exposed-aggregate driveway (60m², $9,500-$13,500), bluestone or sandstone back alfresco patio (20-25m², $6,500-$10,500), occasionally a small segmental-block retaining wall to step the back-yard slope (under 1m, $2,500-$4,500). Total package: $18,500-$28,500 depending on stone choice and any retaining. Owners want low-maintenance materials and don't want to be hosing pavers every weekend.

Why do new Cardinia Lakes driveways need such heavy reinforcement?

Cardinia Lakes was built on what used to be wetland-edge clay (the lakes themselves are an engineered feature of the development). The underlying soil is Class M to occasionally Class H reactive clay. Standard developer-spec driveways with no mesh and minimal base routinely crack within 2-3 years. Our spec for Cardinia Lakes lots: 100mm slab with SL82 mesh on 100mm compacted Class 3 base with 75µm moisture barrier and saw-cut control joints at 4m intervals. For Class H lots (engineer-confirmed) we step up to 125mm slab with SL92 mesh. Cost difference vs minimum spec: ~$15-$25/m² more. Crack-prevention value over 15 years: priceless.

Can a Cardinia Lakes pool surround integrate with the alfresco patio?

Yes — and it's the cleanest visual outcome when the same paver continues from alfresco zone to pool surround. Two design constraints: (1) the immediate pool-edge band needs P4/R11 slip-rated finish (honed bluestone or sand-blasted sandstone both work), so we'll often use a slightly different finish of the same stone right at the pool edge; (2) the alfresco patio and pool surround want falls in opposite directions — patio falls away from house, pool surround falls away from pool — so the high point sits between them. We design the level transitions in advance, often with a grated linear drain at the high-point line.

Do you do small-block landscaping where the patio is competing with the lawn?

Accepted Answer

Yes — small-block design is exactly the Cardinia Lakes problem. A 400m² lot with the house taking 220m², garage 36m², side setbacks 80m², front lawn 30m² leaves about 35m² for the back yard. A 25m² patio + retaining + drainage eats most of that. We design with the trampoline/swing-set/dog-run in mind — the patio shouldn't consume the kids' play space. Often the right call is a smaller patio (15-18m²) plus a stepping-stone path through the lawn rather than fully paving everything. We're happy to recommend less paving if the brief calls for it.

Most Cardinia Lakes lots want a side path connecting front driveway to back patio (so you can wheel bins, mowers, kids' bikes without going through the house). Typical spec: 900-1200mm wide segmental block or matched-paver path, polymeric-sanded joints, 100mm compacted Class 3 base. Cost: $130-$180/m². 12m of side path: $1,400-$2,200. If your existing path is concrete and cracked, lift-and-replace with segmental is usually similar cost to repair-and-seal and looks 100% better.
