Paving & stonemasonry in Cardinia Lakes.
Cardinia Lakes is young-family country — mortgage-belt couples in new 4-bed builds with kids under 10, second incomes, busy lives. The default 2026 package is an exposed-aggregate driveway, a low-maintenance bluestone or sandstone alfresco patio, and occasionally a small block retaining wall to step the slope. Materials chosen so you’re not hosing pavers every weekend.
The Cardinia Lakes paving story.
Reactive-clay engineering is everything here.
Cardinia Lakes was built on former wetland-edge clay (the lakes themselves are an engineered feature of the development). The underlying soil is Class M to occasionally Class H reactive clay. Standard developer-spec driveways with minimal base and no mesh routinely crack within 2–3 years. Our default spec: 100mm slab, SL82 mesh, 100mm compacted Class 3 base, 75µm moisture barrier, saw-cut joints at 4m. For Class H lots we step up to 125mm + SL92. Cost premium over minimum spec: ~$15–$25/m². Crack-prevention value over 15 years: enormous.
Small-block design that respects the kids’ play space.
A 400m² Cardinia Lakes lot with house (220m²), garage (36m²), side setbacks (80m²) and front lawn (30m²) leaves only ~35m² for back yard. A 25m² patio eats most of that. We design with the trampoline / swing-set / dog-run in mind — the patio shouldn’t consume the kids’ play space. Often the right call is a smaller patio (15–18m²) plus a stepping-stone path through the lawn rather than fully paving everything. Happy to recommend less paving when the brief calls for it.
Low-maintenance is the brief.
Cardinia Lakes families don’t want to be hosing pavers every weekend. That means: bluestone or porcelain over sandstone (less staining), polymeric-sanded joints (no weed germination, no ant infestation), and gentle falls so debris washes to the lawn edge rather than collecting at corners. Bluestone holds its colour for life and shrugs off chlorine splash if you’re combining with a pool.
Side-path networks — the bit owners forget.
Most Cardinia Lakes lots want a side path connecting front driveway to back patio so you can wheel bins, mowers and kids’ bikes without going through the house. Typical: 900–1200mm wide segmental block or matched-paver path, polymeric-sanded, on compacted Class 3 base. Cost: $130–$180/m². 12m side path: $1,400–$2,200.
